Victimisation is illegal under the Equality Act 2010.
Victimisation takes place where one person treats another badly because they have, or are suspected of having, performed a “protected act” in good faith - which involves taking or supporting any action taken for the purpose of enforcing the Equality Act 2010, including in relation to any alleged breach of its provisions.
Examples of victimisation may include actions such as treating an employee or colleague maliciously, spreading rumours about them to others, or encouraging colleagues to participate in such behaviour. This often occurs after the individual has made a report or complaint.
A person is not protected from victimisation where they maliciously make or support an untrue complaint.
