Sexual violence

Any kind of unwanted sexual act or activity including rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

Rape

When a man uses their genitalia to have penetrative sex with another person without their consent.

Sexual assault

An act of physical, psychological and emotional violation, in the form of a sexual act, inflicted upon someone without their consent.

Sexual abuse

When someone under the age of 18 is forced, pressurised or tricked, by someone older than them, into taking part in, or watching, any kind of sexual activity.

Consent

Someone consents when they agree, by choice, and have the freedom and capacity to make that choice. For example, this means that someone cannot give their consent when they are:

  • Scared or threatened
  • Bullied
  • Very drunk or under the influence of drugs
  • Asleep or unconscious

Consent cannot be assumed on the basis of a previous sexual experience or previously given consent. Consent must be given explicitly every time sexual activity occurs. Consent may be given to one sort of sexual activity but not another and can be withdrawn at any time.
